On August 24, 2006 the town took delivery of a "new to us" compactor to be
used for the collection and recycling of: newspaper, cardboard, poster
board, paperboard food boxes (cereal boxes, cracker boxes, soda boxes,
etc.), junk mail, shredded paper, magazines, telephone books, books both
paper back and hard cover. If it's paper or cardboard it goes in the
"green giant".
Steve Dawson a Limerick resident was the first one to use
the compactor just after being turned on for the first time. This piece of
equipment is a "tax dollar saver" if everyone takes advantage of using it.
We have shipped our second load mid October weighing 17,240 lbs. or 8.62
tons. If we did not recycle this paper and cardboard then it would all go
to MERC at $73.88 per ton. Between saved shipping costs and tipping fees
the town saved $1,011.85 for just this one load and that's not counting
the $301.70 we receive from EcoMaine at $35.00 per ton for recycling.
It's really easy to recycle (you don't even have to break down the boxes)
just toss them in the hopper. We are also increasing the recycling of tin
cans (rinsed leave labels on), all plastics such as detergent bottles,
shampoo bottles, kitty litter pails, and aluminum foil food containers,
tin foil, aluminum pie plates, etc. Here again we save $73.88 for every
ton sent to EcoMaine.
Watch for news about recycling used motor oil, antifreeze, used oil
filters in the near future.
Questions about recycling or the Transfer Station Operations just call
during open hours 207-432-0064. If you don't have your car sticker they
are available only at the Transfer Station and they are free and so are
the hundreds of items in the "Take It Shoppe".
